Don't look, Mom!

When Son16 was about 5 years old, he was outside playing on the driveway one warm summer day when he dashed into the house, told his mom, "Don't look out the window, okay?", and then dashed back outside. Now, my wife is a very smart woman. So she did what any smart parent would do. She ran directly to the window, did not pass GO and did not collect $200. And she arrived at the window just in time to watch young Son whip it out and pee all over the driveway!

When you make the decision to have kids there is just no way to predict what types of rules you might have to make up. But 'thou shalt not pee in our yard' has been a standard guideline for our kids since that day.

... 'thou shalt not pee in our yard' ...

Does that mean the neighbor's yard or the street or aisle 3 at the grocery store are all fair game?

My experience with kids has been that they will take a rule to its most narrow, literal interpretation ... when to their advantage. And expand the interpretation far beyond reason ... when to their advantage... Just like adults...

I can't for the life of me figure why a kid would actually want to pee in the driveway... But then I have no kids, so that might explain my bafflment.

Too funny! Well, maybe he was just trying to fertilize the grass and missed?

We never had a rule of "don't paint on the walls with chapstick" but we do now. Yes for real.
